Historical Overview

Manuel Vargas, born in 1893 on his father's ranch, gathered these saplings during a family trip to Pescadero and planted them despite his father's warnings about their legality. His father Antone had immigrated from Portugal in 1880 and worked for Martin Murphy before leasing and eventually purchasing land from W.E. Crossman. Manuel became known as 'Mr. Sunnyvale' for his dedication to preserving local history, founding the Old Timer's Club in 1957 and serving as charter member of the Sunnyvale Historical Society.

These trees symbolize the immigrant experience, agricultural heritage, and community dedication to preserving Sunnyvale's history for future generations.
